Animated Earth
2016-now
Bronze, glass
95cm diameter
The Inca word for our living body is ‘Alpha Camasca’ or Animated Earth. The dodecahedral shape represents iconic fossils on each of the twelve sides of this cosmic dice. Some of which still have living descendants, others have gone extinct. The archaeopteryx in front. An exact copy of an early humanoid (homo habilis) skull on top for now and early bacterial life (stromatolites) at the bottom. Each could easily switch sides if we make it our destiny.

Giant Oceanic Manta
2017
550x600x55cm
5500 stainless steel fishhooks
This sculpture had to be made as manta’s and these mega earthlings in particular are so incredibly impressive and graceful. These gentle giants can have a wingspan of 7 meters! Like all marine megafauna they need our help since we lose too many of them as bycatch and their gills are worth a lot of cash.. just wanted to give a sense of wonder about what is still out there in the world🌍

‘Plankton’
2022
Bronze
38cm diameter
This bronze sculpture of a planktonic organism (Radiolaria Hexacontium) needs a bit of background as it is an exact copy of a one celled organism of about 0.08mm in size. What’s cool is for the very first time !! Ernst Haeckel’s ‘Art Forms in Nature’ have been made into 3D! Check the reference in the original SEM pic!
With special thanks to the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and @ejfeenstra for helping with the delicate CT scanning proces of the original Eocene fossil (55-33mln years ago). Geo scientists use these remains of micro fossils to provide valuable information about past oceanic conditions.

Ernst Haeckel’s ‘Art forms in Nature’ for the first time in 3D✨ Exited for new radiolarian light sculptures in the making. After creating many large sculptures of iconic marine species it is time to also make the invisible visible. Mysterious organisms that literally form the bedrock for all other life on 🌍
This is a prototype and an exact copy of a skeleton of an ancient +-40mln year old planktonic fossil (Heliodiscus Radiolarian). The original is >0,1 mm in size. Radiolarians are single celled organisms (Protozoa). Their shells can sink to the ocean floor when they die and become preserved as part of the ocean sediment. These remains, as microfossils provide valuable information about past oceanic conditions.

Inside the studio: 2.7m Oceanic Whitetip Shark, 3.5m Great Hammerhead and the velvet flock Horseshoe Crab, just as the sharks a +-450mln year old evolutionary wonder. What makes a species successful over deep time and what is there to learn?

3m Mako Shark with a view. Stainless steel (+-3500 longline fishhooks) on glass.
Mako’s are my favourite sharks, their speed and beauty are simply magnificent. Swimming with them is living on another planet in a different reality.

‘A New Paradigm’
Gold plated genuine white rhino skull with glass horns
85x37x102cm
The amount of work and team effort that goes into some artworks can be quite insane.. a big thank you to all involved. What an inspiration!
This series of works are an ode to the last megafauna and their wilderness. If we are capable of saving iconic species, we might actually be able to save ourselves.
Translation text on skull:
In harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creatures flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed.
.
When man interferes with the Tao,
the sky becomes filthy,
the earth becomes depleted,
the equilibrium crumbles,
creatures become extinct.
.
The master views the parts with compassion,
because he understands the whole,
His constant practice is humility.
He doesn’t glitter like a jewel but lets himself be shaped by the Tao,
as rugged and common as stone.

Title: Leatherback Turtle
Year: 2019
Dimensions: 230x206x55cm
Material: +-4500 stainless steel longline fishhooks
Edition: 1/5
Photo by @nikedolman at the AMO Expo, Porto Cervo, Sardegna, Italy.
This sculpture is an ode to the last marine megafauna. Leatherback sea turtles have always fascinated me. Their sheer size and vast migrating patterns, ancient lineage, their conservation status due to many things (unfortunately plastic bags resemble their staple diet of jellyfish) and their utter prehistoric appearance. This gorgeous beast simply had to be made into a sculpture..
